Godfried Schalcken (1643-1706)

Godfried Schalcken (1643-1706), sometimes called Gottfried Schalken, Dutch painter especially famed for his ability to capture the effects of candle light. He’s outside the usual time range for this blog but I became interested in his work after seeing the 1979 BBC TV Schalcken the Painter, based on a short story by Sheridan le Fanu, a story inspired by Schalcken’s paintings.
